last week i followed photographer Mark Dorrian around on his return visit to Glasgow to shoot for his and SPILL's very own Seán Aidan's project CHICKS WHO SMOKE here are some of the behind the scenes shots featuring models Lauren Andrew and Helen McLean. check out the CWS website for more information and loads more photographs.
video has been called a little boring. i kinda get it, but the song is catchy. although I'm thinking the rest of 'Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans' will be average. HOWEVZ, Uffie and Pharrell would have hot kids. end.
this wednesday saw the last SPILL show on Subcity Radio for the summer. we brought you tracks we've been loving over the past year and a half and thrown in some newbies too. if you missed the show you can listen back to it HERE also you can listen back to any episode we've ever done over at our Subcity show page HERE
don't think you've heard the last of us though. over the summer we shall be prerecording shows and making them avalible as downloadable podcasts!
if you've been reading newspapers, blogs or tuning into the news over the past few weeks you might have noticed that in Malawi a same sex couple were arrested and imprisioned for 'gross indecency' by celebrating their love for each other.
however, as she has adopted 2 children from Malawi and makes numerous charitible donations to the country each year, Madonna has been able to get the gay couple released after speaking with the Malawi government. UGOGURL!
her newest single 'Not Myself Tonight' has been slated for being too similar to GaGa or Madge, and has earned Xtina the nickname of 'Floptina' ORIGINAL. IMO, 'Not Myself Tonight' is anything but a flop and new newest album 'Bionic' features collabz from my favourite band Le Tigre and well as Peaches, M.I.A. and Nicky Minaj.
and SPILL finally has got their hands on these tracks. check dem out below!
i posted a blog about kelis a while ago which featured her new track 'acapella' well before it's release date, however due to copyright laws the post got deleted. but here is the video. i can't stop watching. she is back, hopefully for good. i am loving how trippy the video is, also. make me wanna get high.
a while ago i posted an interesting video i found as inspiration for this project.
i have been examining the riot grrrl movement for part of my college project. a huge part of the movement is about being yrself, not caring what other people think and feeling comfortable in yr own skin. over the years this movement has helped me become more at own in my own skin and with this project i aim to inspire people to do the same.
i photographed models topless as the naked human form is one of the most natural things in the world. i used different body types to show that beauty comes in many shapes and forms and i projected text, ranging from derogatory words to inspirational messages, onto their bodies using an over head projector. i still have a lot of photos to edit and will be playing around with exposure to make the model's skin tones merge with the canvas, therefore making the models the canvas.
i just watched the movie 'DARE' and found it amazing. the trailer above does give quite a lot a way, but the movie is very surprising, well shot and thought evoking. also Zach Gilford who plays bad boy 'Johnny' is a dreamboat.
if you like the look of the trailer you can watch the movie here!
needless to say i freaking love lady gaga, and once again she has out done herself. the video is 9 minutes of sheer amazingness. fashion credits to Haus of Gaga for their custom made ciggarette sunglasses, Brian Lichtenberg for his custom made police tape dress, Fred Butler for the amazing telephone head dress and Nicola Formichetti for the styling. (i wanna be lady gaga)
after months of waiting, hours of the album on repeat, losing tickets and winning tickets I finally got to see the xx live!
the venue was the obscure 'studio 24' which is basically in the middle of nowhere. we arrived late and missed all three support bands and by this time the venue was more of less full. we had a good view (sorta) but were stuck near the back next to loud drunken idiots. all was good though.
i was curious of how the gig would go, considering the band are quite quiet and mellow, but was amazed at how good they were. flawless vocals (one word - goosebumps) and great drum beats were also noticable throughout the whole gig. there wasn't much interaction with the crowd, but to be honest, i don't think anyone was expecting any. everyone there was just in awe of the music.
everyone remembers the catchy, in yr face electro pop that was 'i get around', right? well i used to think dragonette were a one hit wonder until i heard them covering calvin harris' - the girls aka the boys, which has now become a SPILL anthem (observe the lyrics and it's obvious) but now i am in love with their newest album - 'fixin' to thrill'
my favourite track is definitely 'liar' it's minimal electronic backing beat is so catchy and the lyrics are fun and the beat gets a bit filthy right towards the end.
"'cos i've been makin' up a list of things i'd do to you, as we dance on either side of the room"
i went to see 'A Single Man' the other day. it is official, Tom Ford is a genius. the storyline is incredible and touching and the acting is great. Colin Firth's BAFTA was well and truely deserved, as was, the cute as ever, Nicholas Hoult's win at the Elle awards. this movie is visually stunning and i highly recommend you go see it. x
on saturday SPILL will officially be 1 year old! one year ago is when it all started in The Twisted Wheel. to celebrate yesterday we held a birthday party in the studio for our 2 hour birthday show with special guests Camille and Laura but don't worry if you missed it as you can listen back anytime here x
Futuristic Retro Champions are art students, turned pop music makers hailing from Glasgow forwardslash Edinburgh. They blast out feel good, stuck-in-yr-head-all-day, electro-pop tracks, which come accompanied by a bold Scottish accent from their songstress Sita Pieraccini.
They have supported the likes of Friendly Fires, The Vaselines and Ladyhawke (to name a few) and are well on their way to becoming huge. You heard it here first.
as well all know, yesterday was valentines day. hope you all had fun, 'cos i know i did. anyway, in Paris yesterday a group of 'peaceful protesters' took to the streets and organised a 'kiss in' as a way of showing their love for their partners, who happened to be of the same sex.
the kiss in was meant to be held at notre dame, but christian protesters found out and were going to interfere and attack the couples because they were gay. wtf? anyway this video is cute as fuck!
OH YA. incase you missed this week's show don't forget you can listen again right here oh and btdubs, Dorrian was a special guest and provided half the amazing playlist.
in other news i'm off to london for a few days next week but in the meantime i leave you with these;
After this post I promise I'll shut up about Chick Rap (for a few days at least)
So Wednesday was the return of Chick Rap on SPILL. We knew we had loads of crackers up our rolled up sleeves so requested a 2 hour episode. It. Was. Amazing. You can listen again anytime here.
In the meantime here's some of my favourites from the show.
Both mine and Sean's favourite song was by Kid Sister (pictured) and it is filthy as france.
Kid Sister - Right Hand Hi Love love love this track. Kid Sister is teaming up with Kelis for a track called "What You Working With" for Kelis' new record. Search Youtube and there is a 30 second clip. Cannot wait for that comeback.
Beyonce - Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix) Beyonce is god. No matter what anyone says, and with lyrics like "pat yo' weave ladies" it's needless to say I love this track.
